FULGURITES!
![]() |
Okay---so they're not tektites or impact glass, but they ARE one of
planet earth's peculiar forms of natural glass. We've added them to our inventory by popular request. It seems
some of you tektite freaks are actually natural glass freaks. No problem! We'll take care of you. There is another
connection with tektites: one of the early suggestions was that tektites were some sort of fulgurite. Here's your
chance to make the comparison, Fulgurites are lightning-fused sand. Their formation seems to be largely restricted to fairly pure sand, so they are found mostly in desert areas where wind erosion has exposed them. The examples from the Libyan Desert of Egypt below are most typical. The 2.7 and 4.4 gram specimens are half-shells, selected to better display the vitreous, glassy channel in the center of these irregularly tubular features. However, this year we scored some spectacular museum-quality specimens. These were recovered from a witnessed lightning strike between Quartzsite and Bouse, Arizona, USA. Careful excavation of the site resulted in the recovery of amazingly detailed and delicate specimens. We bought the very best, and here they are. |
