Darwin Glass, Tasmania
The impact event that produced australasian tektites raises more questions than I would dare to begin to list. But the geographic distribution patterns and variations in chemistry have always made it hard to think in terms of one individual impact. Darwin glass offers an important clue. Clearly, neither Darwin glass nor its mother crater are genetically linked with Australasian tektites but they do appear to be of identical age! Think of the string of fragments involved in the collision of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter in 1994. I currently think there's a case for at least three impactors in the Australasian event (Tibetanites, Indochinites-Philippinites- Australites, and Darwin Glass).
I've been told that most of the area where Darwin Glass was previously collected has been incorporated into park
lands and collecting is no longer permitted. Buy enough for future generations, as the supply is dwindling----
Here is some of the finest Darwin glass you will ever see anywhere. These were the 50 or so best specimens in something
like 10 kilos that we sorted through. Enjoy! There's also some more typical material at lower cost shown in the
final image.
